Garments

When does an image of a product become a portrait?

What is the tone of the dialogue between object and subject?

This ongoing series investigates the unstable boundary between fashion photography and portraiture, questioning where the identity of the subject resides. Produced through collaborations with Melbourne fashion labels including Dysnomia, Narcissus, Yumaverse, On the Rose Corsetry, and Revival Fashion, the work approaches the garment as an active participant in the construction of identity.

Clothing becomes inseparable from the body that wears it, just as the body becomes inseparable from the visual language that frames it. The photographs therefore refuse to resolve whether they are advertisements, portraits, or something in between.
